FAQs About Direct Drive Variable Speed Screw Compressors
What is the difference between a direct drive and a standard variable speed drive?
In a compressor with a standard variable speed drive, the motor typically transmits power to the screw via a belt or gears. In direct coupling, the motor and screw share the same shaft, eliminating any intermediate transmission element. This reduces mechanical losses, minimizes wear and simplifies maintenance by eliminating one of the most failure-prone parts.
Is direct coupling with variable speed drive more efficient than belt transmission?
Yes. Belt transmission involves losses of between 3% and 5% of power. By eliminating it with direct coupling, all the motor’s energy reaches the compressor screw entirely. Combined with the variable frequency drive, the result is equipment with maximum energy efficiency, ideal for applications with high operating hours.
Does the direct drive variable speed screw compressor generate less noise?
Generally, yes. With no belt or pulleys, additional sources of vibration and noise are eliminated. Furthermore, the variable frequency drive reduces revolutions when demand is low, which decreases the sound level during large periods of the day. JENDER direct coupling equipment is designed to meet the requirements of the most demanding work environments in terms of acoustic comfort.
How much maintenance does direct coupling with variable speed drive save?
By eliminating the transmission belt, the need to tension it, replace it periodically or check pulleys also disappears. This reduces both the cost of spare parts and production stoppages for maintenance. The permanent magnet motor (IPM or PM) incorporated in this equipment also does not require brush replacement, which extends the intervals between inspections.
For which power ratings is the JENDER direct drive variable speed compressor available?
The JENDER direct coupling with variable speed drive range covers from 7.5 kW to 160 kW, allowing adaptation to both medium-sized workshops and large industrial facilities. Contact our technical team to receive a personalized recommendation based on your required flow rate and working pressure.
Is the direct drive compatible with standard three-phase electrical networks?
Yes, all JENDER direct drive variable speed compressors operate with three-phase 400 V / 50 Hz power supply, the industrial standard in Spain and Europe. The integrated drive manages soft starting, eliminating current peaks that can trip electrical protections or generate penalties on the energy bill for reactive consumption.
